Teen Volunteers Have Successful Summer at ARH August 6, 2004
Twenty-five area teens volunteered over 750 hours at Alleghany Regional Hospital this summer, while raising over $1,130 for the Alleghany Highlands Free Clinic.
The volunteers were very active in the hospital this summer and even spent a few mornings volunteering at the Brian Center in Low Moor. In July, the teens also co-sponsored a bloodmobile with ARH.
Their service was part of the six-week Southwest Virginia Area Health Education Centers Teen Volunteer Program. To fulfill the requirements of the program the teens had to volunteer at least twenty hours, attend one of two planned college field trips, and participate in at least two of the volunteers fundraisers. To qualify for the summer program the teens had to be at least fourteen years old with a C average or above.
The teens were very busy providing various services to different departments in the hospital. They performed basic clerical work, visited patients, and assisted with the gift shop and information desks. The teens performed many tasks that allowed them to explore their interests in the medical field. The teen volunteers held numerous community fundraisers to benefit the Alleghany Highlands Free Clinic. They had pizza sales, a Dunkin Donuts sale, a bake sale, and painted faces at Covington Lumberjack games to help raise money. With all of these events they were able to donate over $1,130 to the Free Clinic. This money will be used to benefit people in our community.
The teen volunteers had a choice of attending two college field trips this summer. On Wednesday, July 14, the teens toured the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center in Fishersville. They were given a tour of the facility and were shown the various levels of rehab. On Wednesday, July 21, the teen volunteers visited the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. They learned about osteopathic medicine and were able to view various specimens.
The Teen Volunteers did an amazing job this summer. They were always enthusiastic and eager to help out around the hospital. The teens also got to explore their medical interests during their experience this summer. And their hard work allowed us to extend our goal for the Free Clinic and raise a total of $1,133, says Teen Volunteer Coordinator Stacey Nicely.
The teen volunteers for the summer are: Megan Andrews; Bre Burkholder; Andrew Campbell; Katie Durham; Cassie Fornwalt; Schuyler Fury; Mitchell Garcia; Quincey Garcia; Shannon Gibson; Olivia Kelly; Hannah Kelly; Holly Lodge; Katie Mooney; Heather McCulley; Jeremy Nicely; Stephanie Persinger; Lacassa Pritt; Levi Pritt; Tiffany Reid; Tayler Ross; Jessica Rupe; Beth Seldomridge; Larami Vanness; Johnna Waugh; and Brittany Young.
